Daily Devotional: Peter said to Him: Why can’t I follow You now?…

“Peter said to Him, ‘Why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.’” (John 13:37)

Peter relied on his own logic, but did not wait on God. He anticipated in his mind where the test would come, but the trial came from an unexpected place. “I will lay down my life for You,” he declared with conviction. His intention was sincere, but his understanding of himself was limited. Jesus, knowing him better than he knew himself, replied, “The rooster will not crow until you have denied Me three times.” Peter did not know that, at the decisive moment, his strength would fail, for he would lean on human reasoning, and true faith does not doubt. Abraham, the father of faith, did not doubt.

Natural devotion can draw us to God, can fill us with enthusiasm, and make us feel the desire to follow Him. But natural devotion alone will not make us faithful. When we base our walk only on emotions or human logic, sooner or later we will fail, because these things are unstable. Only total obedience to the will of God will make us steadfast. Those who live by obedience do not depend on their own strength, but lean on the Lord and His commandments, which are unchanging and perfect.

The difference between Peter and Abraham lies in unconditional obedience. Abraham did not hesitate to offer Isaac—he did not question, did not wait to feel secure, he simply obeyed. And for this he was called a friend of God and became one of the most blessed men on earth. His faithfulness was not based on emotions or momentary impulses, as it was with Peter, but on a faith grounded in absolute obedience. If we want to be truly faithful, we cannot trust in our own strength or fleeting feelings, but must hold firmly to the Law of God, for only through obedience do we experience true blessing and divine favor. –Adapted from O. Chambers. Until tomorrow, if the Lord allows us.

Pray with me: Dear God, it is true that my strength and determination are not enough to keep me firm in the face of trials. Peter believed he was ready, but he did not know his own weakness. I know that I too can deceive myself, trusting in my emotions or in my human logic, without realizing that only total obedience to You can sustain me.

My Father, today I ask You to shape my heart so that my faithfulness does not depend on what I feel or what I understand, but is firmly rooted in Your Word. I want to be like Abraham, who obeyed without hesitation, without seeking explanations or guarantees, simply trusting that You are faithful. Help me not to trust in my own strength, but to rely entirely on Your commandments, for I know that it is only through obedience that I will find true steadfastness in my walk with You.

Oh, Most Holy God, I adore and praise You because You are unchanging, and in You I find security. Thank You that I do not need to depend on my own strength, but can lean on Your Law, which is perfect and eternal. May my life be marked by obedience, so that I may experience the fullness of Your blessings and live according to Your will, without fear and without hesitation. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law is my faithful guide on the way to the heavenly Canaan. If it were possible, I would clothe myself with Your commandments as if they were a mantle, so beautiful are they. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
