“My people have forgotten me” (Jeremiah 18:15).
To forget someone is the worst offense we can commit, and yet, this is exactly what God says about us in “My people have forgotten me”. Consider this: we can oppose someone, harm them, ignore them, but to forget them? That is the depths of despair. And yet, we do this to the Lord. We forget His benefits, live as if He did not exist, as if He were dead. It is a real danger, because forgetting does not happen suddenly — it comes gradually, when we cease to be attentive, when we relax and let ourselves be carried away by the current of life.
So, how to escape this disaster? The answer is simple, but it requires action: “Take heed to yourself!” Being attentive is keeping your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, knowing where you are going. It is not that we forget God on purpose, but carelessly we drift away, until He becomes just a distant memory. And here is a powerful safeguard against this forgetting: to obey God. When you decide, with your heart, to live according to His Word, you place yourself in a position where God Himself takes care of you, ensuring there is no distancing.
And here is the incredible promise: for those who obey the powerful Law of God, forgetting simply does not happen. Why? Because this responsibility ceases to be yours and becomes that of the Creator, who never fails. When you live in obedience, God keeps you close, keeping the flame of the relationship alight. So, decide today: stop living adrift, choose to obey, and trust that God will hold you firm, so that you never forget Him and He never leaves you. -Adapted from J. Jowett. Until tomorrow, if the Lord permits.
Pray with me: Dear God, I often fall into the danger of forgetting, living as if You did not exist, as if Your benefits were not real, offending You, as Your Word says: “My people have forgotten me”. I confess that, many times, this forgetting comes gradually, when I relax and let myself be carried away by the current of life, until You become a distant memory.
My Father, today I ask You to give me the grace to be attentive, to take heed to myself, so that I do not drift away from You and fall into the disaster of forgetting. Teach me to live in obedience to Your incredible Law, for I know that this is the only protection against distancing. I ask that You guide me to decide to live according to Your will, trusting that, in doing so, You Yourself will take care of me, ensuring that our closeness is never lost.
Oh, Most Holy God, I worship and praise You for promising that, for those who obey Your will, forgetting does not happen, for You, who never fail, take the responsibility to keep us close, with the flame of the relationship alight. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your powerful Law is the beacon that guides me back to You, a light that illuminates my memory. Your commandments are the ropes that hold me firm, a song that resonates in my soul. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
