“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10).
God originally created man pure and clean, in a perfect way, so that His divine image would be reflected not as an empty, lifeless shadow in a mirror, but as a true and living representation of the invisible God, manifesting the hidden and indescribable beauty of His inner being. In man’s understanding, there was the image of God’s wisdom; in his spirit, divine goodness, patience, and gentleness; and in the affections of the human heart, the manifestation of God’s love and mercy.
In man’s will, there was the image of God’s righteousness, holiness, and purity. In his words and actions, divine goodness, truth, and mercy were reflected. In man’s dominion over the earth and creatures, one could see the omnipotent power of God; and finally, in the immortality of the human soul, there was the image of God’s eternity. This perfect image would have remained for all eternity, had it not been for the disobedience of our first parents.
Just as we lost this great blessing through disobedience, we can recover it through obedience. As we follow the Father’s laws, He leads us to the Son, who offers us forgiveness and salvation. Obeying the divine commandments is not only an act of faith, but the path to being restored to perfect communion with God, once again reflecting His divine image and living according to the eternal purpose for which we were created. -Adapted from Johann Arndt. Until tomorrow, if the Lord allows us.
Pray with me: Dear God, I thank You for creating us in Your image, with such a high and meaningful purpose. I acknowledge that, through disobedience, we lost the perfection for which we were created, but I praise You for Your grace, which offers us the way back to You, through obedience and communion with Your Son.
My Father, today I ask You to restore in me Your divine image. May my life reflect Your goodness, holiness, and mercy, just as You desired from the beginning. Teach me to obey Your commandments with a heart full of faith and love, so that I may live in harmony with You and fulfill the purpose for which I was created.
Oh, Most Holy God, I praise You for Your infinite goodness, which offers us forgiveness and the chance to reflect Your glory once again. Thank You for sending Your Son to lead us back to You. May my life be a true representation of Your holiness, as I walk in obedience and faith, awaiting the day when I will be in full communion with You. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law is my sword against the attacks of the enemy. Your commandments are like stars that light up the dark nights of my life, bringing hope and direction. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
