“Is this how you repay the Lord, foolish and unwise people? Is He not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?” (Deuteronomy 32:6).
We did not create ourselves, and this reality reminds us that we cannot be sovereign over ourselves. We are God’s property, who formed us, redeemed us, and regenerated us by His mercy. Sometimes, especially in youth or times of prosperity, the idea of being independent, masters of our own choices and lords of our destiny may seem attractive. But this false independence is only an illusion, which fades away over time. We discover that life without dependence on God is unnatural, does not sustain us in times of trial, and does not lead us to our eternal purpose.
As creatures, we have two fundamental duties: gratitude and obedience. Gratitude for having received the gift of life from the hands of the Creator, who loved us and called us into existence. And obedience, because only by following God’s commandments do we find the path to true life and peace. It is not about restriction, but about genuine freedom—freedom that comes from being at the center of God’s will, living as He created us to live, in communion with Him and in submission to His plans.
Obedience is the key that opens the door to the most sublime destiny God has prepared for us: to dwell with Him in eternity, in the heavenly mansion that Jesus promised to prepare. It is only through faithful obedience that we will reach this glorious goal. When we choose to follow His commandments, we not only acknowledge His sovereignty, but also find the joy of living for the purpose He gave us, experiencing a glimpse of the eternal life that awaits us. –Adapted from J. H. Newman. Until tomorrow, if the Lord allows us.
Pray with me: Dear God, I acknowledge that I did not create myself, but You, who in Your goodness formed, redeemed, and regenerated me. Sometimes the world entices me with the illusion of independence, but I know that true security and purpose are found only in You. Help me to reject any idea of self-sufficiency and to depend on You in every area of my life, trusting in Your love and Your guidance.
My Father, today I come before You with gratitude for the precious gift of life and for Your patience in guiding me. Teach me to live in obedience to Your commandments, understanding that they are not restrictions, but paths to true freedom. May I live at the center of Your will, in communion with You and in submission to Your plans, experiencing the peace and joy that only You can give.
Oh, Most Holy God, I praise You for preparing an eternal and glorious destiny for those who obey You. Thank You for Your promise of heavenly dwellings and for showing us the way to them through Your Word. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law is what keeps me firm in Your purposes. I love Your commandments, for they are like a fountain of clear water that purifies my spirit. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
