“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you; when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned” (Isaiah 43:2).
Although temptations may seem disturbing and painful to us, they are often useful. Through them, we are tested, purified, and instructed. No saint of the past was spared these struggles, and all reaped spiritual benefits by facing them faithfully. On the other hand, those who gave in to temptations fell deeper into sin. No house is so holy, no place so isolated, that it is free from trials—they are part of the path for all who seek to please God.
As long as we live in this body, we will not be completely free from temptations, for we carry within us the inherited inclination toward sin. When one trial ends, another begins. But those who cling to the sublime commandments of God find strength to resist. The powerful Law that the Father gave to the prophets of the Old Testament and to Jesus is the shield that enables us to overcome. Through faithful obedience, we acquire patience, humility, and strength to overcome all the enemies of the soul.
Stand firm. The Father blesses and sends the obedient to the Son for forgiveness and salvation. Hold fast with love to the magnificent commandments of the Lord. Pray with me: Eternal Lord, strengthen me amid the trials I face. May I not despair when temptation arises, but trust that You are teaching and shaping me.
Teach me to love and obey Your glorious Law. May Your commandments prepare me to resist with courage and make me stronger with every battle won.
Oh beloved God, I thank You because You use even the struggles for my good. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your powerful Law is like a shield that protects me from evil.
