“Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of the man who prospers in his way” (Psalm 37:7).
Patience is a virtue necessary for all areas of life. We need to exercise it with ourselves, with others, with those who lead us, and with those who walk beside us. We must be patient both with those who love us and with those who hurt us. Whether facing a broken heart or a simple change in the weather, an illness or old age, patience is the silent shield that keeps us from collapsing. Even in the failure of our duties or in the disappointments we suffer from others, it is patience that sustains us.
But this patience does not arise by chance—it flourishes when we submit ourselves to the magnificent Law of God. It is the commandments of the Most High that shape our soul to resist the impulse to complain and the despair of a weary soul. The Law that the Father gave to the prophets of the Old Testament and to Jesus is the foundation that forms persevering, longsuffering servants, full of self-control. Obeying these commandments gives us the structure to firmly endure what once crushed us.
Whatever type of pain, frustration, or loss you face, stand firm. The Father blesses and sends the obedient to the Son for forgiveness and salvation. Do not give up obedience to the incomparable commandments of the Lord. Obedience brings us blessings, deliverance, and salvation—and strengthens the heart to endure every trial with faith and hope. -Adapted from Edward B. Pusey. See you tomorrow, if the Lord allows us.
Pray with me: Faithful Father, give me a patient spirit in the face of life’s difficulties. May I not become irritated or discouraged, but remain steadfast, trusting that You are in control of everything.
Teach me to live obediently to Your glorious Law, even when everything in me wants to rush the answers. May Your wondrous commandments be my shelter and guidance in every trial.
Oh beloved Lord, I thank You because You use even suffering to teach me to wait on You. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law is like solid ground where my soul can rest. Your commandments are like eternal pillars that uphold my heart in peace. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
