Daily Devotional: “Guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life…”

“Guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

Vigilance is one of the great keys to keeping the love of God alive in our hearts. We are surrounded by temptations at every moment—whether visible or subtle, small or overwhelming. If we are not attentive to the sins that so easily entangle us, to the traps set for our feet, and to the persistent cunning of the enemy, we will end up falling. And a spiritual fall brings with it guilt, darkness, and a temporary distance from the sweet fellowship with the Lord.

That is why we need to walk firmly supported by the extraordinary commandments of God. The Law that the Father gave to the prophets of the Old Testament and to Jesus teaches us to always be on guard. It reveals the hidden snares and strengthens us against the attacks of the enemy. Obeying the powerful Law of the Lord protects us, awakens us, and preserves the fire of divine love burning within us, even in times of trial.

Do not walk inattentively. The Father blesses and sends the obedient to the Son for forgiveness and salvation. May the brilliant commandments of the Most High be your wall of protection, your light in the darkness, and your silent alarm against every snare of evil. Obedience brings us blessings, deliverance, and salvation—and keeps us close to the heart of God. -Adapted from J.C. Philpot. See you tomorrow, if the Lord allows.

Pray with me: Watchful Lord, awaken my heart so that I do not fall asleep in the face of danger. May my eyes always be open and my spirit always alert to the snares of the enemy.

Teach me to love Your Law and to obey it zealously. May Your magnificent commandments be my alarm against sin, my tower against evil, and my guide in times of darkness.

Oh, my God, I thank You because You call me to watch so that I do not fall. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your powerful Law is like a sentinel who never sleeps. Your commandments are like walls that surround me and guard me faithfully. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
