“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, does not stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of mockers” (Psalm 1:1).
Think of Balaam: he is seen as a false prophet, but all the prophecies he recorded were fulfilled exactly. For a time, his character shone impressively; he listened to God and spoke the truth. However, the enemy overcame him through greed, and he traded a heavenly crown for the riches and honors that Balak offered. He wanted to die as a righteous man, but he did not want to live as one, and he ended up lost, turning his back on the right path.
Balaam’s story shows us that knowing God and even speaking in His name is not enough if the heart still chases after the things of this world. To avoid falling into the same trap, we need to cling to the magnificent and dazzling commandments of the Creator. The Law delivered by the prophets who came before the Messiah and by the Messiah Himself is simply enchanting and unsurpassed, and obeying it is what protects us from greed, brings us true blessings, and leads us to salvation in the Son.
Do not let anything in this world steal what God has prepared for you. Choose today to live the life of the righteous, walking before the Lord, with your heart steadfast in obedience to His commandments. This is the only way not to lose everything for something fleeting and to secure the eternal blessing that comes from the Father through the Son. Adapted from J.D. L. Moody. See you tomorrow, if the Lord allows.
Pray with me: Lord, thank You because Balaam’s story warns me of the danger of knowing Your ways but not following them to the end. Help me to examine my heart and identify any greed that still wants to lead me astray.
Give me, Father, a deep love for Your will, strength to say no to the world’s offers, and determination to live each day as someone who truly wants to please You.
Oh, beloved God, I thank You for showing me through Balaam how dangerous it is to want blessings without obedience. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your powerful Law is a sure beacon that keeps me from shipwreck. Your commandments are an eternal treasure worth more than all the gold in the world. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
