Daily Devotional: My people have forgotten me (Jeremiah 18:15).

“My people have forgotten me” (Jeremiah 18:15).

To forget someone is the worst affront we can commit, and yet, that is exactly what God says about us in “My people have forgotten me.” Think about it: we can oppose someone, harm them, ignore them, but forget them? That is rock bottom. And yet, we do this with the Lord. We forget His benefits, we live as if He does not exist, as if He were dead. It is a real danger, because forgetting does not happen suddenly—it comes gradually, when we stop paying attention, when we relax and allow ourselves to be swept along by the current of life.

So, how can we escape this disaster? The answer is simple, but it requires action: “Take care of yourself!” Being attentive is keeping your eyes on the road, your hands on the wheel, knowing where you are going. It is not that we forget God on purpose, but carelessly we drift away, until He becomes just a distant memory. And here is a powerful protection against this forgetfulness: obeying God. When you decide, from your heart, to live according to His Word, you put yourself in a place where God Himself takes care of you, ensuring that there is no distancing.

And here is the amazing promise: for those who obey God’s mighty Law, forgetfulness simply does not happen. Why? Because that responsibility is no longer yours, but the Creator’s, who never fails. When you live in obedience, God keeps you close, keeping the flame of the relationship burning. So decide today: stop living adrift, choose to obey, and trust that God will hold you firmly, so that you never forget Him and He never leaves you. -Adapted from J. Jowett. See you tomorrow, if the Lord allows us.

Pray with me: Dear God, I often fall into the danger of forgetfulness, living as if You do not exist, as if Your benefits were not real, affronting You, as Your Word says: “My people have forgotten me.” I confess that, many times, this forgetfulness comes gradually, when I relax and let myself be carried away by the current of life, until You become a distant memory.

My Father, today I ask You to give me the grace to be attentive, to take care of myself, so that I do not drift away from You and fall into the disaster of forgetfulness. Teach me to live in obedience to Your amazing Law, for I know that this is the only protection against distancing. I ask You to guide me to decide to live according to Your will, trusting that, by doing so, You Yourself will take care of me, ensuring that our closeness is never lost.

Oh, Most Holy God, I worship and praise You for promising that, for those who obey Your will, forgetfulness does not happen, for You, who never fail, take the responsibility of keeping us close, with the flame of relationship burning. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law is the beacon that guides me back to You, a light that illuminates my memory. Your commandments are cords that hold me firm, a song that resounds in my soul. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
