“Then Elisha said, ‘Go ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons’” (2 Kings 4:3-4).
The Lord’s instruction to the widow was clear: the miracle would happen in the secrecy of obedience, away from unbelieving eyes, away from human logic. The widow and her sons needed to be alone with God, without interference from circumstances, doubts, or the opinions of others. What was about to happen would not come from natural laws, nor from human strength, but solely from divine power. For the miracle to occur, the widow needed to obey without hesitation.
This story illustrates a fundamental truth: God has given us various commands in the Scriptures. If we want to receive His blessings, we must obey without questioning, without seeking shortcuts or our own solutions, without trying to please Him in alternative ways that ignore His holy and powerful Law. God always acts according to the principles He has established, and He does not change. Obedience is the way to see His power manifested in our lives. Just as the widow did not see the miracle before following the instructions, we will also not see God’s work if we are not willing to obey first.
True faith is manifested when we set aside our own logic and surrender to obedience. When we follow God’s commands, by faith, without waiting for visible proof, miracles happen. We are healed, provided for, blessed, and led to eternal life in Christ Jesus. The widow had to shut the door and trust. And when we do this, we discover that He always honors those who live by faith and obedience. –Adapted from Lettie B. Cowman. See you tomorrow, if the Lord allows.
Pray with me: Dear God, it is true that Your miracles happen in the secrecy of obedience, far from doubts and human logic. Just as the widow had to shut the door and trust, I want to learn to turn away from unbelieving voices and place myself entirely in Your hands. I know that Your power does not depend on circumstances and that obedience is the way to see Your wonders.
My Father, today I ask You to strengthen my faith so that I do not depend on visible signs, but obey with a sincere heart. Help me to shut the door to doubt, fear, and the false securities of this world, and to open my life completely to Your will. I know that You act according to Your unchanging principles and that Your faithfulness never fails. May my trust be in You and not in my own understanding, for it is in obedience that I find Your work.
Oh, Most Holy God, I worship and praise You because You always honor those who live by faith and obedience. Thank You because Your Word is firm and Your promise is certain for those who follow You without reservation. I know that when I obey, I see Your power manifested and find the fullness of the blessings You have reserved for those who love You. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law protects me from the snares of the enemy. I cannot imagine a day without Your commandments in my heart. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
