Daily Devotional: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs…

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

Jesus taught us, through His example, to abandon the pursuit of human ambition and to surrender completely to the will of the Father. His words, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve,” are a powerful reminder that the true purpose of life is to serve and honor God above all else. Through the prophets, He announced that He would choose a humble people, who would tremble at His words and find joy in obeying His perfect commandments. In this call to humility and obedience, Jesus established the foundations for a blessedness that transcends earthly circumstances.

Those who possess the character of humility and submission are the ones Jesus has placed in possession of His heavenly Kingdom. They recognize their condition as mere creatures, shaped from the simplest elements of creation, yet endowed with a perfect body and mind by the Creator. This awareness does not lead them to pride, but to the recognition of their total dependence on God. They remember that everything they have—from the ability to feel, think, and act—is a divine gift, and this drives them to live in submission to God’s will.

True happiness is not found in seeking greatness or human power, but in obeying the Creator with a humble heart. Those who understand that they were formed to live in harmony with divine purposes discover the deep joy that comes from obedience. By recognizing their position as servants of God, they experience the blessedness promised by Jesus: a place in the heavenly Kingdom and a peace that can only be found in total submission to the Lord. -Adapted from Hilary of Poitiers. Pray with me: Dear God, I thank You for the example of Jesus, who showed us how to abandon the pursuit of human glory and surrender completely to Your will. His words remind us that the true purpose of life is to serve and honor You above all things. Help me to live with humility, trembling before Your Word and finding joy in obeying Your commandments.

My Father, I acknowledge that all I am and possess comes from You, the Creator who shaped my life with perfection and love. Give me a submissive heart, aware of my total dependence on You. May my life reflect gratitude and obedience, reminding me that every ability to feel, think, and act is a gift from You, meant to be used for Your glory.

Oh, Most Holy God, I praise You because true happiness is not in greatness or human power, but in submission to Your purpose. Thank You for calling me to live in harmony with You, experiencing the joy and peace that come from obedience. May I be counted among the humble and submissive who possess Your heavenly Kingdom, living forever in Your glorious presence. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law walks beside me. Your commandments are treasures of great value that I keep with zeal, for in them I find true happiness. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
