“And when the people complained, it displeased the Lord” (Numbers 11:1).
There is profound beauty in a heart that joyfully and gratefully surrenders to God, even amid afflictions. When we decide to endure in faith everything the Lord permits, we become participants in something far greater than ourselves. Spiritual maturity does not consist in avoiding suffering, but in knowing how to face it with humility, trusting that there is purpose in every trial. And the person who, with all the strength God gives, commits to faithfully fulfilling the Lord’s holy will lives honorably before heaven.
It is common for us to seek comfort by telling everyone around us about our pain. But wisdom lies in bringing everything to the Lord alone—with humility, without demands, and without rebellion. Even in our prayers, we must adjust our focus. Instead of crying out only for relief, we should ask God to teach us to obey and to strengthen us to follow His powerful Law faithfully. If this request is sincere, it transforms everything. For obedience to God’s magnificent commandments does not merely resolve the problem—it heals the root, restores the soul, and establishes a peace the world cannot give.
Those who choose to live this way discover something glorious: friendship with God. As happened with Abraham, the one who obeys and surrenders completely to the will of the Most High is received as a friend. There is no greater title and no more sublime reward. The peace born of this friendship does not depend on circumstances. It is firm, lasting, eternal—the direct fruit of a life shaped by obedience to God’s holy, perfect, and eternal Law. —Adapted from John Tauler. Until tomorrow, if the Lord permits.
Pray with me: Eternal Father, I thank You for the opportunity to surrender my life entirely to You, even amid afflictions. I do not want to flee from what You have appointed for me, but to endure it with joy and gratitude, trusting that all things work together for the good of those who love and obey You. Give me, Lord, the strength that comes from above to fulfill Your will in every detail of my life.
Lord, today I decide to stop focusing only on my difficulties. In my prayers, I want to seek something greater: understanding, wisdom, and strength to obey Your powerful Law with integrity and reverence. May my mouth be silent before people, and may my heart open before You with humility and faith. Teach me to walk according to Your magnificent commandments, for I know that this is the only path to true peace.
O Most Holy God, I adore and praise You for being faithful to those who seek You sincerely. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your powerful Law is like a divine seal upon those who love You, granting them rest even amid the storms. Your commandments are like golden keys that open the doors to friendship with You and to the peace that surpasses all understanding. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
