Daily Devotional: The first man, formed from the earth, is earthly; the second…

“The first man, formed from the earth, is earthly; the second man is from heaven” (1 Corinthians 15:47).

With Adam’s fall, man became earthly, carnal, and diabolical; without God and, consequently, without love. By distancing himself from God, he also lost the capacity to truly love, turning instead to love for the world and, above all, to self-love. In all situations, man now devotes himself to studying, favoring, praising, and exalting himself, which explains the proliferation of self-help specialists and motivational speakers.

This depravity of human nature needs to be completely removed; and this can only occur through deep repentance, a holy concern, the mortification of sensual pleasures, and the crucifixion of pride and self-love. Man needs to turn to serious obedience to God’s commandments.

The carnal man finds it difficult to recognize the seriousness of his condition and, therefore, is content with a partial conversion. He needs to see his real situation—his alienation from God and his inclination to sin—so that he may be prepared for a radical change of life. Only by confronting his fallen nature and seeking complete renewal in God can he experience the true purpose for which he was created: to live in communion with God, loving Him above all things. -Adapted from Johann Arndt. Until tomorrow, if the Lord allows us.

Pray with me: Dear God, I recognize that, apart from You, my nature is selfish and inclined to sin. I ask You to enlighten my heart so that I may see the seriousness of my condition and be led to deep and sincere repentance. Help me to abandon love for the world and for myself, turning completely to Your will and Your truth.

My Father, today I ask You to mortify in me all pride, all excessive self-love, and all attachment to earthly pleasures. Transform my heart so that I may love You above all things and faithfully obey Your commandments. Give me strength to confront my fallen nature and seek the complete renewal that only You can offer.

Oh, Most Holy God, I adore You and praise You for being the source of all life and true love. Thank You for Your mercy, which calls me to live in communion with You and to abandon all that separates me from You. May my life be a testimony of obedience and love, reflecting the purpose for which I was created: to glorify You and enjoy Your presence forever. Your beloved Son is my eternal Prince and Savior. Your mighty Law always protects me from the enemy’s deceptions. I cannot stop meditating on Your beautiful commandments. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, amen.
